Poor sanitation threatens the health of billions of people around the world. Around the globe, nearly 1,000 children die each day from illness and disease related to poor hygiene and contaminated water. We find this devastating and we are doing something about it. With proper sanitation and education, the spread of many deadly diseases can be eradicated. Compassionate Beings works within the Monastic Schools in Bhutan to stop deadly or life debilitating disease in its tracks. The monastic schools house some of the most impoverished boys of Bhutan. It is critical to have access to safe water and sanitation facilities that inevitably leads to improved hygiene. Once we have a Compassionate model which is highly efficient, effective and sustainable we will expand to encompass elementary public schools across Bhutan.
HYGIENE
Give young monks the opportunity to live without poverty. It honestly does not take much to make a difference and to help shift from a poverty stricken life to one where all basic needs are met – clean water, clean toilets, nutritious food and a clean shelter free of lice and fleas. We would like to throw in compassion too – a little compassion goes a long way.
For $1 a day, you can provide access to the basics necessities that will change a young monk’s health and wellbeing. This $1 a day helps purchase soap, tooth brush, new robes, blankets, laundry soap and nutritious food while building and developing an educational program. Our program will instil personal hygiene skills and provide basic nutrition throughout the Monastic Schools. $1 or more a day can also provide access to health care and dental care on a regular basis.
SANITATION
Clean water and toilets are essential for good health and a disease free life. Your compassionate support helps transform young lives in Bhutan. We’re dedicated to making sure the monks have access to clean water and sanitary facilities year around. The need for better sanitation in Dechenphodrang Monastic School is blatant with only a few urinals and a few toilets for 300+ monks to use. With inadequate facilities for the 300+ monks open defecation or lack adequate sanitation facilities is still extremely prevalent. The consequences can be devastating for the health of the monks as well as the environment when proper sanitation does not exist. Poor sanitation contributes to 100,000’s children deaths from diarrhea alone each year. Chronic diarrhea can hinder child development by obstructing the absorption of essential nutrients. We already know nutrition is low at the monastic school and then diarrhea furthermore contributes to poor absorption. Please help us make a difference!!
NUTRITION
Poor health and malnutrition are the adversaries we are trying to combat by improving sanitation, hygiene and nutrition. Children who grow up without proper sanitation, hygiene and nutrition are at risk of premature death, disease and illnesses. Stunted growth, skin conditions, lung infections and other illnesses plague the monastic schools on a daily basis. Each year, poor nutrition kills million of children around the world and those who do survive have limited cognition and will struggle for the rest of their life.
We’re dedicated to making nutrition accessible to the monks at Dechenphodrang Monastic School to combat illnesses and disease among the young monastic students. The school supports 15 monastic teachers and 300+ student monks. Each meal provides for all staff, faculty, and students at the school.

Local participation and empowerment is key for all of Compassionate Beings projects. We encourage community members to participate and to become stakeholders throughout all phases of the project’s implementation. We will be utilizing local labor to help build and to maintain the infrastructure. Cleanliness and maintenance will be key to the success of each project and for its life expectancy. At Compassionate Beings, we believe in lending a hand up, but not in giving free handouts. Local buy in, participation and contribution is paramount for the success of any project.
